Civils 2000 was subcontracted by WBHO to relocate existing utility services out of the V&A Waterfront basement parking area for the new Clock Tower Precinct, and upgrade the retained services in the new area. Our first task was to move traffic routes to ensure access to the basement to begin excavation. Moving and upgrading services started and the basement constructed. Due to the number and position of services construction was phased and the Civils 2000 returned to complete the services and roadworks following the completion of the basement construction.
Civils 2000 had to overcome several challenges throughout this project, including the absence of drawings that accurately showed the position of existing services, excavating in hard rock, dealing with contaminated soils; and, the need to shore all trenches due to the instability of the in situ material and the depth of excavations. With this site being located in the busy, commercial part of a working harbour, traffic control (including pedestrians – especially when cruise liners were docked) was particularly difficult to manage, and ensuring the safety of our employees was a top priority due to site congestion. However, Civils 2000 managed the project to a successful conclusion and the satisfaction of all parties involved.
