Overview of the Project

This project involved upgrading the existing capacity to 20 Ml/day to accommodate increasing flow from the area and to ensure that the effluent quality standards met those set by the then DWAF.

Scope of Work

The work included:
⦁ Demolition of several structures and modification of existing aspects of the plant
⦁ New sludge draw-off chamber
⦁ New Bioreactor
⦁ 2 SSTs
⦁ Clarifier
⦁ RAS & WAS pump stations
⦁ Transfer pump station
⦁ Chlorine dosing chamber & chlorine building
⦁ New Maturation ponds
⦁ New GCL lined Sludge ponds
⦁ Office & MCC rooms in a new Blower Building
⦁ Paving and internal roads

Challenges & Successes

Existing dry sludge had to be removed and, because the plant remained operational throughout the project, the wet sludge had to be handled by continuous over-pumping to another sludge lagoon.
In addition to the demands of undertaking construction in a constrained environment the site team had to be continuously aware of the movement of the plant’s operational staff as they went about their daily operational duties.
