Contract value: R11,000,000
Duration: 18 weeks
Completed: December 2020

Overview of the Project

The V&A Waterfront’s objective was to upgrade the existing potable water pipeline by installing a new pipeline in the northbound carriageway of Dock Road between Ebenezer Circle and South Arm Road circle.

Scope of Work

The project involved implementation of long-term traffic management measures to bring the dual carriageway down to one lane in each direction, and then undertake deep excavations to lay the new 400 diameter  pressure pipes and connections.

Challenges & Successes

The V&A Waterfront, is a major tourist attraction in Cape Town, and even during the quieter times caused by the Covid-19 pandemic the volume of pedestrian traffic was still significant. Ensuring the safety of the pedestrians was a major challenge. However, the signage, barricades and layout implemented by Civils 2000 ensured no incidents for the duration of the contract.

An interesting aspect of the installation was the requirement to lay the new pipeline across the canal. This was achieved by coring through the existing abutment headwalls and, using a suspended scaffolding system, installing the cradle for the pipe below the bridge.

The existing services in the vicinity were also a risk to be managed. Many services exist from the days prior to the V&A Waterfront redevelopment and these services had to be scanned, exposed and identified then protected or relocated.

The main challenge to overcome was the planned water supply outages. This was handled by shutting down the supply at 12am each time in order to make the connections and then applying a controlled resumption via staged opening of the control valves. There were no blowouts and service was resumed on time, each time, without a single complaint from the residents. This project was completed on time and without any hitches.
