Overview of the Project
The bridge piers were constructed by installing temporary caissons to allow excavation, dewatering and the construction of the bridge piers, with the bridge beams and deck cast in situ.
The bridge has a 35 metre span and the deck comprises precast simply supported beams which were installed by lifting into position using a mobile crane reaching out over the Salt River. The bridge beams were lifted into position during a period of very high flows in the Salt River and great care had to be taken to ensure the works were not inundated or any elements washed away.
However, with careful attention to planning the installation process and providing secure access to the site for the concrete delivery trucks the bridge was completed successfully and today forms an important link in the city’s transport network.
